Season | Winter

Growing Zone | 5

Winter has arrived early here at Plot 49.

We are experiencing consistently cold 30 degree days with a wind chill that is making it feel even colder.

The trees have lost all of their leaves. The evergreen shrubs and dried hydrangeas in the garden are having their moment to shine as they keep things looking lively amongst the bare branches.

Plant | Green Mountain Boxwood

I like to call these "foundation plants." When planting a garden, you have to think 10 steps ahead. Or in the gardener's case, 10 years ahead. Planting shrubs that are evergreens is important to a garden that experiences a true Winter season. Having lost most of our aesthetically pleasing landscaping come winter, the boxwood stays green, giving a much needed fill to the gaps a garden experiences during this time. These in particular grow nice and tall, creating a beautiful hedge.

Winter Garden

- Pot your paperwhite bulbs indoors for a        much needed pick-me-up of fresh blooms.

- Close up the potting shed for the season.

- Keep walkways clear of snow and ice.

- Mulch garden beds to keep the ground warm during the cold winter months.
